Health Services
Marshdale's Health Room is staffed each day for 7 hours by our Health Techs. They are trained to help children who do not feel well, need first aid or require medication at school. If they are not available, our office staff helps take care of our students' needs.
Our District Registered Nurse is Morgan Stroop. She is on staff to provide health and nursing support to schools and programs within her articulation area. School-based health techs, working as paraprofessionals, are trained and delegated through the District Registered Nurses to provide direct student care in schools.
Common ailments among school-aged children:
- Fever - Wait until children are fever-free for 24 hours before letting them return to school.
- Diarrhea - Keep children home until stools are formed and your doctor gives the okay.
- Vomiting - Keep children home until they are 24-hours free from vomiting.
- Severe cough and cold symptoms should keep kids home from school.
- Sore throat - If your child has been diagnosed with strep throat, keep him/her home for at least 12 hours after starting antibiotics. If your child has a mild cold, it's okay to go to school.
- Pinkeye - Children and adults do not need to stay home unless they have a fever or are not able to participate in usual activities. Call your doctor for advice and possible treatment.
- Rashes - Children should be kept home until they're diagnosed.
- Earaches aren't contagious and there's no need to keep a child with a mild earache home as long as he/she feels well enough to concentrate.
- Mild cold or respiratory symptoms are no reason to keep children at home so long as their nasal drainage is clear and their cough is mild.
Medication
Any medication, either over-the-counter or prescription, including cough drops, needs to be delivered to the Health Room by a parent, and a medication agreement must be completed. Please, for the safety of our children, do not send medication with your child on the bus or their backpack.
Medical Forms
Jeffco families must submit a medical provider-signed agreement if their student requires medication during the school day.
Mental Health Supports
Marshdale promotes a safe, positive learning environment by supporting mental health.
Jeffco Public Schools recognizes the growing concern with injuries resulting in concussion or concussion-like symptoms. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), or concussion, in children is a rapidly growing public health concern.
Jeffco Public Schools partners with Hazel Health, Inc. to provide free, additional physical and mental health care services for students. This a telehealth extension of support to Jeffco students enrolled at district-managed schools.
Jeffco Public Schools' Certified Application Assistance Site (CAAS) operates through the Jeffco Public Schools Community and Family Connections (CFC) program. CFC assists any individuals inquiring about Health First Colorado (Medicaid), Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and other health-related resources.
Hearing and vision screenings are conducted for students in their schools according to the Colorado Department of Education guidelines.
The Department of Health Services at Jeffco Public Schools recognizes that any student or family can have lice. Jeffco’s district nurses follow several protocols and are an excellent resource for school administration, teachers, parents and families.
Parents and guardians of Jeffco Public Schools students can purchase student accident, athletic and dental insurance coverage.
Health Services in Jeffco
Jeffco Public Schools' Department of Health Services provides health consultation and resources to support students and their families.
Each school has a district Registered Nurse (RN) who consults with students, families, school staff and administration. Ask your student’s school for their district RN contact details and notify the RN if your student has a health need that requires support during the school day.
Each school also has a school health aide who does day-to-day care of students such as medication, Band-Aids, and ice.
Keep your student’s health concerns updated at registration and as conditions change during the school year. It is important for Jeffco to have current contact information of families.
When Students and Staff Should Stay Home
Jeffco follows the recommendations from Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) on when students and staff should stay home from school, work or childcare. District RNs provide guidance to school administration following the How Sick is Too Sick document.
The best ways to stop the spread of infection is through good hand washing and staying home when sick.
Immunizations
Colorado law requires all students attending Colorado schools and licensed childcare centers to be vaccinated against certain diseases unless a medical or non-medical exemption is filed.
For information about vaccine requirements, resources and exemptions, visit the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s School-Required Vaccines page.
